Is there is any truth in the concept of ‘beauty sleep’? Well, yes there is a lot of truth in it!

If you don’t get enough sleep or you sleep badly your body will create more of the stress hormone cortisol. Raised levels of cortisol can lead to stress and inflammation in the body which has an effect on the condition of your skin. Inflammation in the skin can manifest itself as eczema, dermatitis, skin sensitivity and break outs.

If you suffer from eczema or dermatitis this can cause you to scratch at night leading to an even worse nights sleep, and so the vicious circle continues. In contrast, getting a full and good nights sleep can help reduce inflammation and improve your skin.

Increased inflammatory cells in the body lead to increased breakdown of collagen and depletion of hyaluronic acid, making the skin lose its glow, strength and luminosity.

When skin cells become damaged we need growth hormones to repair them and during the deep sleep cycle at night we produce more of these hormones. So, lack of sleep will result in more noticeable signs of skin ageing.

Also whilst you are sleeping the body rebalances it’s hydration levels. Your skin is able to recover moisture, while excess moisture is removed. Having a poor nights sleep can lead to puffiness and dark circles under the eyes. We recommend Dermalogica’s Stress Positive Eye Lift.

Night time is also an excellent time to ‘deep treat’ your skin with serums, creams and other ‘lotions and potions’ . This is because your skin switches from ‘barrier’ to ‘absorption’ mode at night so any active ingredients work better for you at night. The ideal time to apply night products is between 9-11pm.

Lots of our facial and skin care clients in both the Tarporley and Ellesmere Port salons complain of not getting enough sleep and this has an effect on their skin health. One of our favourite products to recommend at night is Dermalogica’s Sound Sleep Cocoon. It’s light gel formula helps to rehydrate the skin whilst you sleep and the ritual of breathing in its soothing aromas helps you to relax and unwind at the end of the day.

One of our top tips for a better night’s sleep is to wear an eye mask and we have one to give away on 3rd January. Just follow us on Instagram and tell us what your top tip is for a good night’s rest and we will put your name into our free prize drawer. The lucky winner will receive a Dermalogica Luxury Eye Mask to wear at night.
