Waxing tips to boost your self-confidence

Written by Angela, 21st June 2021

At this time of year depilatory waxing is something we hear a lot about and removing unwanted body hair can do a lot to boost your self confidence during the warmer Summer months. I would just like to say at this point, that it’s ok to have body hair, but if you don’t want to be a slave to the razor or to mess around with smelly depilatory creams, then waxing could be your saviour.

At Sensoria we are Waxperts and we carry out an awful lot of waxing treatments so never be self-
conscious to come for hair removal. We have definitely seen it all before – all shapes and sizes, all ages and all hair growth patterns. Nothing looks ‘unusual’ to us!

All our Waxperts have got to together to answer your most commonly asked questions about waxing and included some top tips to help you get more from your waxing treatments.

How long does the hair need to be before I can have waxing?

How long your body hair needs to be for an effective wax will depend mainly on a couple of factors:

  • How coarse your hairs are. Generally, the coarser the hair the longer the hair will need to be as short, coarse hairs don’t adhere to the wax as well as longer or finer ones.
  • How the hairs have been removed before. If your last hair removal was a wax, thread or tweeze or if you have never removed the hair before, the hairs will have a ‘tapered’ or ‘finer’ end. This tapered end adheres well to the wax and this type of hair generally doesn’t need to be quite as long compared to shaved hairs. Hairs that have been shaved have a blunt, coarse end and, if they are too short, will not stick to the wax as well.

A good rule of thumb is that if you have been shaving, or if your hair is thick it will need to be slightly longer for waxing. This will allow the wax to bond onto the hair more effectively. If the hair is finer or if the ends of the hairs are tapered then you can usually get away with a little less hair length as the wax will adhere better to it.

Hairs generally need to be around 4-5mm long for a good, thorough wax to take place.

Does waxing hurt?

In the hands of an experienced practitioner, like our Waxperts, it should never be a painful service. You may have a little discomfort depending on which are you are having treated, but it is generally a more-than-manageable experience.

You are unlikely to hear screams coming from our treatment rooms but more likely to hear chatter and laughter as our clients and Waxperts catch up on what has been happening in life since the last visit. Our practitioners are professional yet approachable and really put you at your ease. Many of our clients find their waxing appointment relaxing as it’s some ‘me-time’ when they can indulge in a bit of  much needed self-care.
Spoiler alert! Due to our training and experience we make waxing look easy, but don’t be fooled, it’s our product choice, precision application and removal that makes for a fast and pain-free treatment.

We really understand that you can be nervous about waxing, particularly if it’s your first wax or if it is the first time that you have visited us. We can offer you a free patch test if you are unsure if waxing is for you and it will also give you a chance to ask any waxing questions that you may have, meet one of our Waxperts, have a look at the salon and generally feel more comfortable about the waxing service that you have booked.

We know starting waxing treatments, or changing waxing practitioner, can still be a daunting prospect. That’s why we always recommend speaking to one of our friendly team who can suggest a great way to get started.

What is the best wax for hair removal?

There are two different categories of wax used for hair removal, hard (or hot) wax and soft (or strip) wax. Both are equally effective, but each type is used for a specific type of hair removal, so the effectiveness is often in the choice by your wax practitioner.

Hard wax is usually used if hair is coarse, dense, very short or in a sensitive area. Think heavy underarm hair growth or intimate waxing. It is ideal for boyzilian, brazilian or hollywood waxes as the wax adheres firmly to the hair and not the skin. It gives a thorough and long-lasting removal for these areas.

Soft wax is more usually used for less dense hair and for large expanses of hair such as leg waxing, and arm waxing. Your practitioner can advise you on what is the best type of wax for your skin and hair growth.

Can I have waxing all year round?

Many people think that waxing is just for the Spring and Summer months or before going on holiday, but we actively encourage waxing all year round.
This is because, although waxing is not a permanent method of hair removal, regular waxing tends to make the hair grow back finer and less dense. This means that by the time you have a holiday, special occasion or just want to feel good about yourself, you will have smoother less hairy skin.
Also, who wants to mess around with shaving and depilatory hair creams all winter? Time is precious and a four to six weekly waxing treatment can really free up your time allowing you to enjoy more of things you love in life.

Can I have intimate waxing if it’s ‘the time of the month’?

We have noticed that there is a myth circulating that you cannot have your brazilian or hollywood if it’s ‘the time of the month’. This is just not the case. Whatever the time of the month, you can have your
intimate wax. We adhere to strict hygiene measures to ensure that that each waxing service is clean and ‘mess-free’.

Our professional practitioners always provide a comfortable and relaxing environment for you to have your treatment in and you should never feel self-conscious with us whatever the time of the month is.

Is waxing expensive?

Waxing is a very affordable salon service. However, be wary of very cheap waxing treatments, as there is always a cost involved with a quality service. It takes time, resources, training and great products to be able to offer a safe, consistent and effective waxing service.
The cost of waxing will depend on which type of wax you choose and the area to be treated.
Did you know we offer discounts for several waxing treatments taken at the same time? Discuss these waxing service ‘bundles’ with your wax practitioner.
