Microneedling: Your Guide to Glowing Skin
Written by Angela, 20th July 2025
What Is the Purpose of Microneedling?
Microneedling is a popular collagen boosting skin treatment that helps your skin repair and renew itself naturally.
It works by creating tiny, controlled micro channels in the skin using ultra fine needles.
This stimulates the production of collagen and elastin which are essential proteins for maintaining smooth, firm, and youthful-looking skin.
Microneedling can soften fine lines and wrinkles, reduce acne scars, diminish stretch marks and enlarged pores, improve skin tone and texture, and boost the absorption of skin care products. Benefits of this treatment give visible results with minimal downtime.
Is Microneedling Right for Me?
Microneedling is ideal for anyone wanting to slow signs of ageing, brighten dull or tired skin, fade mild scarring or pigmentation, and refresh their complexion with minimal downtime.
However, it is not recommended if you have active acne, open wounds, skin infections, or certain conditions such as eczema or rosacea.
There are alternative treatment choices available for those with sensitive skin types; speak with our expert skin therapists to find an alternative treatment that is gentle on the skin and minimally invasive.
How Does Microneedling Compare to Other Treatments?
Compared to chemical peels and microdermabrasion, microneedling works deeper into the skin to stimulate collagen naturally.
It has less downtime and irritation risk than laser treatments and can be safely combined with other procedures. This makes microneedling a versatile and effective option for skin rejuvenation.
Benefits Beyond Skin Appearance
Besides enhancing skin texture and firmness, microneedling strengthens the skin barrier, improving resilience to environmental damage. It also boosts the effectiveness of your skincare products and supports long term skin health and renewal.
Preparing Your Skin for Microneedling
For best results, your skin’s natural barrier should be healthy and strong. It is advised to avoid harsh exfoliants or retinol in the weeks before treatment, and focus on gentle, hydrating skin care. Our therapists will guide you through personalised pre-care for optimal healing during your skin consultation.
What Can I Expect at a Microneedling Appointment?
Your session includes cleansing, microneedling with a fine needle device, with micro infusion of a nutrient-rich serum for enhanced absorption.
Redness and sensitivity may occur for 24 to 72 hours but will gradually fade quickly, giving you a transformative treatment with minimal downtime.
Which Treatment Should I Book?
When booking a micro needling treatment at Sensoria, select the section ‘Dermalogica Skin Treatments and Facials’ and opt for the ‘Pro Pen Needling’.
What is included in a Dermalogica Pro Pen Needling Treatment?
Following a consultation you skin will be prepped with a double cleanse, and resurfaced with an appropriate exfoliation product. PRO Restore is applied to your skin to strengthen and will be reapplied throughout the micro needling process.
The individual, sterile and disposable needle cartridge is chosen for you. The needle size and depth chosen to suit your personal skin health goals.
Are the Needles Disposable?
Yes! It is important to know that these cartridges are disposed of after every use.
They are not designed to be re-usable – not even on the same client.
This is because they are not able to be re-sterilised for a second use and the needles are fragile so would not be able to do an efficient job second time around.
How Often Should I Book?
We typically recommend a course of three treatments spaced eight weeks to ensure best results.
However, this is individualistic and appointment timing can be advised more accurately by our skin therapists before treatment. This rebooking window is timed purposefully to allow your skin time to rebuild collagen between sessions for visible improvements in tone, texture, and firmness.
Caring for Your Skin After Microneedling
After your treatment, your skin begins a natural renewal process.
It’s normal for your skin to look a little red or feel sensitive for a day or two.
To support smooth healing, keep your skin clean, avoid touching your face excessively, and use the calming, hydrating products we recommend.
Avoid heavy makeup for at least 24 hours, and protect your skin from sun exposure with a broad spectrum sunscreen daily.
We offer a range of powerful and professional sun cream choices by Dermalogica, available to purchase in the salon or in our online store to compliment your treatment.
In addition, you should avoid intense heat such as saunas, steam rooms, or hot baths for 48 hours.
Staying hydrated and following personalised aftercare instructions will support your skin’s recovery.
Finally, avoid harsh products or intensive skin treatments while your skin rebuilds collagen over the next few weeks and months.
Understanding Your Skin’s Healing Process
Microneedling triggers your skin’s natural repair response. The redness and sensitivity after treatment are normal and show your skin is beginning to renew itself. Over the following weeks, new cells grow and collagen production increases, improving texture and firmness. Over months, your skin strengthens with new collagen, providing long-lasting results. Everyone heals differently, and older skin or different skin tones may need more time to settle.
When Microneedling Might Not Be the Best Choice
Microneedling is safe for most but may not suit those with active acne, open sores, or infections.
Skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea may flare up. Pregnant or breastfeeding clients, or those with autoimmune diseases or diabetes, should consult their GP before treatment.
Certain medications may act as a contraindication for treatment such as blood thinners.
You will be asked whether you are taking any medications by our therapists and your health history will be reviewed during consultation to ensure your safety and best results.
