Cellulite, what cellulite?

Written by Angela, 5th June 2016

I remember many years ago, before effective cellulite treatments were available, a client has told me about what her young daughter had said to her whilst she was in a changing room in a shop. As she was about to slip into a new dress she had her eye on for a while, her daughter spoke up ‘Mummy why are your thighs quilted?’. I’ve never forgotten this story and throughout my career I have seen plenty of people with quilted thighs. In fact 80-90% of us have cellulite! This ‘quilting’ or ‘mattress’ phenomenon is complicated. Medical journals will have you believe that it is no more than fat pressing against connective tissue. If this was true then why do even underweight individuals suffer from this condition? Cellulite is particularly common in the hip and thigh area and is more than just about fat. Recent research shows that cellulite is caused by inflammation in the tissues. Over time this contributes to the breakdown of collagen, resulting in a reduction in the skins firmness and suppleness and gives rise to the characteristic ‘orange peel’ effect on the skin. So what can be done about cellulite? You cannot ‘cure’ cellulite, but you can do a lot to help the appearance of it with salon treatments and homecare products.

What can you do to combat cellulite?

My top top for cellulite is body brushing using a natural bristle brush. Body brushing needs to be done daily on dry skin – ideally before your shower. The brushing action will aid both the circulation of the blood and the lymphatic circulation and help to reduce inflammation. The mistake that people often make is to brush too hard or to scrub with the brush. To be effective the strokes need to be light and long, starting with the soles of the feet and working up the legs toward the groin. You will notice when you have body brushing in the salon we brush with one hand and stroke with the other and always upwards towards the heart. Try and replicate this at home for good results. You an pick up a professional quality body brush from us for only £8.50 if you have trouble sourcing a good one.
