There are a variety of reasons why we can be left with skin that is not as firm as it used to be. Age is the number one cause of why skin starts to lose its tone. As we age the collagen and elastin in our skin starts to function less effectively. Combine this with pregnancy, possible weight gain or weight loss and our skin ends up not fitting our body quite as snugly as it used to. And it’s not just the elasticity of our skin, but the colour too. As circulation becomes impaired, thread veins and sometimes varicose veins creep in to give an aged look to our skin. What can you do?

My top tip for the prevention of aged body skin is the same as for the face: sunscreen, and it’s never too late to start. No matter how bad you think your skin looks at the moment, trust me, it can look a lot worse. Just Google ‘sun damaged skin’ if you are still not convinced. The ultraviolet rays from the sun attack collagen and elastin fibres in the skin which means that it no longer has the elasticity and strength that it had in its younger days. So as soon as the suns rays come out remember to apply sunscreen frequently and liberally.
