7-step routine to improve your skin texture this autumn

Written by Angela, 27th October 2019

Autumn is well and truly here. And although the change of seasons is welcomed and celebrated by many, unfortunately, it’s not always welcomed by our skin. From lowering temperatures outdoors to artificial heating sources indoors, there are many environmental changes that can affect our skin.

In fact, one of the most common skin complaints we hear around this time of year is problematic skin texture – causing dull, lacklustre skin, visibly open pores and overall skin that feels rough and bumpy to touch.

So, this month at Sensoria, we wanted to delve into skin texture – and how you can improve it by adapting your autumn skincare regime

Angela Bartlett, Cheshire skincare expert

Angela Bartlett, our MD at Sensoria, has created a 7-step routine – so you can improve your skin’s texture to reveal healthier, glowing and soft skin.

Don’t worry – 7 steps may sound like a lot – but rest assured it’s straightforward to follow and you don’t need to do every step every day.

Step 1 – Pre-cleanse  your skin

If you’re serious about improving your skin texture, it’s important to go back to basics.

And the basics of good skin care? It’s always been your cleansing routine. Traditionally a one-step process, over the past few years the skin-enhancing benefits of the double cleanse have been proven.

Starting by pre-cleansing means you melt away makeup and SPF, while also cutting through grease, sebum, sweat and other impurities. Overall, pre-cleansing decongests your skin by dissolving through the layers of residual products and environmental pollutants that build up over the day.

Dermalogica PreCleanse

At Sensoria, we always recommend Dermalogica’s PreCleanse for two main reasons.

Firstly, it removes oils without clogging pores. Secondly, it contains conditioning essential fatty acids which nourish the skin.

To use simply dispense a pea-sized amount into your hands.

Then, massage into your skin to dissolve surface oil and dirt.

Wet your hands and emulsify with water.

Rinse with lukewarm water.

Repeat AM & PM.

Step 2 – Gently cleanse & exfoliate

After you’ve pre-cleansed, it’s time to gently cleanse and exfoliate your skin.

Gently exfoliating is important for retexturing your skin – removing dulling surface debris like dead skin cells. It also promotes cell turnover – helping to accelerate the process and reveal fresh new skin cells below. Furthermore, after exfoliating skincare products can penetrate your skin better – meaning a hydrated & brighter appearance.

Dermalogica’s Skin Resurfacing Cleanser

Dermalogica’s Skin Resurfacing Cleanser contains lactic acid and antioxidants that condition your skin. It’s highly recommended for ageing skin – helping clients achieve super-smooth and super-clean skin.

To use massage an almond-sized amount onto your skin.

Then, remove with a damp cloth or sponge.

Be careful to avoid your eyes.

Use AM & PM if your skin can tolerate it – however if sensitivity occurs, reduce to once daily and exchange for another prescribed Dermalogica cleanser to suit your skin.

Step 3 – At-home skin peel

By having a professional-grade peel once a week, you can rapidly improve your skin texture. Of course, visiting the salon every week to have this done would be nice – but the reality is it’s time-consuming.

That’s why we love recommending Dermalogica’s at-home peel kit that our clients can do for themselves.

Dermalogica’s Rapid Reveal Peel

The Rapid Reveal Peel kit is a maximum-strength exfoliant that delivers powerful results with no downtime.

Its ingredients include a unique complex of phytoactive AHA extracts, Lactic Acid and fermented plant enzymes to help kick-start skin cell renewal – improving skin texture.

To use massage contents of one tube of ampoule onto face, neck and décolleté.

Leave for 7 minutes.

Then, remove thoroughly with cool water on a sponge or cloth.

You may experience some tingling – but don’t be alarmed, this is completely normal.

We recommend you do an at-home peel treatment once a week – and preferably in the PM.

Step 4 – Tone

Once you’ve thoroughly double cleansed your skin, you should apply a toner – especially if you’re concerned about pore size and visibility.

It’s true that recently toners have received a bad reputation – with some claims they are an unnecessary step in your skincare routine. However, we tend to disagree – when using a specific toner for your skin type, they can not only hydrate but also deliver specific skin condition benefits – such as improving skin texture.

The key lies in finding a high-quality toner that suits your skin type. There are lots of options out there – but Dermalogica has a great selection that caters to many different skin types and conditions.

Remember – we sell a range of Dermalogica products at our salon. You’ll receive Treat Card Points with every purchase – which can add up to prize draws and free treatments.

Step 5 – Apply serum

An important step before moisturising is applying a serum to suit your skin type. Delivering powerful ingredients to your skin, there are a lot of options to choose from – but you can select based on your skin type and concerns you want to solve.

Dermalogica’s Phyto-Nature Firming Serum

Recently at Sensoria, we’ve introduced Dermalogica’s Phyto-Nature Firming Serum. Containing ingredients such as Amazonian Camu Camu it helps you look radiant – transforming your lacklustre and dull skin.

We’ve been talking about this on our social media channels recently – find out more here.

Step 6 – Moisturise

Selecting a moisturiser that suits your skin type is vital – and something we can help you with.

Moisturisers don’t just hydrate, plump up and help reduce the signs of wrinkles –  but they also protect your skin from environmental assaults – like the wind and rain we get so much of during autumn. Moisturisers further help minimise texture irregularities.

From high-levels of SPF to specialised nourishing overnight treatment creams, speak to us about your skin and we can help you select a moisturiser that will deliver the best results for you.

Step 7 – Use a primer on your skin

The final step to improved skin texture is selecting a primer that works hard for your skin.

Creating an extra layer of protection between your skin and your makeup, primers help makeup last longer – and help smooth your skin surface, while evening skin tone.

If you’re especially concerned about pore size, primers dramatically reduce their appearance – and allow makeup to sit smoothly on your skin, rather than creating a pore-dimpled look.

At Sensoria, there are two primers we really recommend to improve skin texture.

Dermalogica SkinPerfect & HydraBlur Primers

Dermalogica’s SkinPerfect SPF30 primer gives you a smooth finish for a flawless makeup application. While the HydraBlur Primer is great for specifically minimising pore, fine lines and wrinkles.

To use simply apply a pea-sized amount and lightly massage onto your skin.

Healthy skincare habits

Like many things in life, forming healthy habits will really benefit you in the long-run.

Your skin care is no different. Incorporating a skincare regime into your everyday life can help you not only look great but feel great too – as it’s something we always recommend at Sensoria as part of your basic self-care.
